All,
The other night noticed some intermittent "Passenger Airbag Off" issues (2006 V70 2.4). My teenager was in the front passenger seat and I noticed the warning (the first time so far) on the mirror indicator panel. Had her move to the back seat and once I got home did some experimentation with my 210 lbs self based on some Googled research and confirmed the intermittent nature.
Seems there was a TSB issued in 2007 with an accompanying fix (A spring kit, Volvo part # 30767457)
NO: 88-45
DATE: 2-8-2007
MODEL: S40, V50, C70, S60, S80, V70, XC70, XC90
MODEL YEARS: See below
CHASSIS: See below
SUBJECT: Lit PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF indication with belted adult passenger
REFERENCE: VIDA
DESCRIPTION:
Customers may experience a lit PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF indication in the overhead console (S40, V50, C70, S80 MY07) or interior rear view
mirror (S60, S80 MY06, V70, XC70, XC90) with a belted adult passenger in the front passenger seat. When this happens, the PASSENGER AIRBAG
OFF indication will typically remain lit until the passenger unbuckles the seat belt or moves out of the seat.
Does anyone have any experience with this issue? I noted that my car does NOT have the spring kit installed, nor did any of the ones at the salvage yard I went to this weekend.
My options as I see them are:
1. Get the spring kit ($50) and install it, hoping for the best (feedback from another Volvo forum suggests this truly fixes the issue, but the sample size is low)
2. Potentially swapping in another manual passenger seat from a 2005+ OR swapping in a power seat from the same vintage donor - a roll of the dice...not sure how much they'd want for a seat and of course the seat may have the same problem.
3. Replace the OWS ($1400).
#3 is a non-starter. It offends me that this is a TSB and NOT a recall. In the BMW world emulators have been developed to always turn the passenger airbag on and these sell for $10.
Any thoughts or experiences anyone care to share? I did notice what seemed to be a substance that mimicked electrical tape where the hose to the sensor connected to the nipple on the OWS, but decided not to futz with it as this is again a $1400 part. When I get some time I'm going to unbolt the seat and take a closer look.
