1996 850R Half Shim Replacement

I added half shims a few years ago which solved the freight train rumble, and now the dreaded rumbling has come back. Do Half Shims need to be replaced or is it because the brake pad has worn down. The brakes are not at the point to replace but maybe next service. Any help would be appreciated.

Since pads are cheap, I'd try to replace them and see what happens.i doubt that half shims need zo be replaced unless they get bent or extremely dirty/rusty.

Did you grease the shims with brake grease? That usually works but I had a set that screeched no matter what and I used some goop call Disk Brake Quiet, I think it is a Permatex product and that shut them up for good. The pads are pretty important as well. The typical auto parts store brands are usually noisy but I have had pretty good luck with Mintex Reds. They are a bit cheaper and less dirty than OEMs.

Never used the shims at all in any of my Volvos. Did have them in 240's that we even had a bumper sticker in Europe saying if it squeals it is a Volvo!

With modern brake pad designs many have the anti-squeal shim built in already and using copper grease on the back of the pads will help further. I did have squealing brakes on a 93 850 GLT initially, but a good clean and OE pads it went away.
