I just bought a 1999 V70R and at some point intend to use IPD's stage 1 ecu upgrade. (stage 0 is nearly finished) I noticed that unlike some other years, IPD doesn't offer an exhaust kit, yet they suggest that upgrading the ecu without upgrading the exhaust is a bad idea. I know it won't net as much power gain doing only the ecu, but is it actually risky? (I do plan on running quarter mile a few times)
Just how thick is the pipe at each point on a '99 R? Is it not thick enough already? If not, what can be done to upgrade the exhaust? Go with a less reputable company? Have something custom made? I'm on a tight budget, so if I can safely do the ecu without messing with exhaust, I'd love to. Any and all suggestions are welcome. I'm also new here so if I did anything wrong feel free to tell me!

I'm pretty sure iPd does make an exhaust system for AWD P80s. For some reason their site doesn't show anything for a 1999 V70R.
Check out this website: https://en.bsr.se/products/sports-exhau ... ust-system BSR has some exhaust systems, but I'm not sure what US shipping could cost from them. I haven't ordered from them either.
ViVA sells some systems as well.

Unfortunately these kits are just cat-back, though, and the downpipe is an important piece of the exhaust system as far as upgrading goes.
Your next best option would probably be a custom exhaust, unless someone knows another source for AWD exhaust systems.
If the dimensions are the same as FWD, the downpipe is 2.5" and beyond that is 2.25".

Are you running an auto trans? If so you should consider the trans is rated to about 320bhp only. I have a 00 R with a Rica software upgrade which is supposedly outputting 312bhp. The down pipe and first section of pipe from the cat are OE and the remainder is a piece of expensive crap from Eurosport which is a T409? supposed stainless steel twin pipe like the standard. When I replace it (it is rusting out in the mufflers) I plan to have a custom T304 real stainless steel system custom built locally. System is not too noisy though.
If you want more power, then look at a manual trans swap like the 97 850 AWD we got up here.

And you're not having any issues with the stock downpipe after the extra boost? Because if not I may be golden. I know IPD stage 1 tune is below 312hp so I'd be even safer. This car isn't going to be a monster by any means. It's my first Volvo performance experiment and my girlfriend will be occasionally driving as well so I'm limited to the automatic. In the future I'll be doing a deeper build on another car.
Also do you have any idea how much you'll be paying for your custom system?

Thanks for the dimensions! I scoured the internet high and low for that info.
Any idea what a custom exhaust setup might cost at local place? I know thats a broad question, so a broad answer is fine.
Maybe I'll just walk in at IPD and ask someone about a 99 exhaust. I live about an hour away. Thats why I've been leaning heavily toward them.

I'd be prepared to spend at least $350-$400. I've never had a custom exhaust done, but I know that most exhaust shops around here have charged in the neighborhood of $100 for small jobs like welding on mufflers or pipe adapters.thewoodnever wrote: ↑29 Jul 2018, 16:19Thanks for the dimensions! Your best bet would be to call around to local exhaust shops, maybe stop in and have them take a look.
It's definitely cool to be that close to a place like iPd! A larger Volvo tuning company is a great resource to have somewhat local. It makes tuning so much easier to dial in, since they can actively monitor and make adjustments.

i was quoted less than $800 CDN for a cat back system with twin mufflers in stainless (that is about $600 US). I believe they were planning to use standard mufflers (not sure which brand). Hardest part on the AWD is the pipe from cat to where it joins at the rear axle area. It is quite tight there.
As to if I have any problems with the performance/muffler on the car. Other than the crap quality of the 'supposed' stainless steel it has been just fine.
Neil.

You guys are extremely helpful! So I think I'll do just the ecu for now and then try to get some local quotes for a custom exhaust when my fatter paychecks start coming in. Any size recommendations for the fabrication? Maybe 3 inch downpipe and the rest 2.5? And material stainless steel? And is there any other specifics I should mention when I go in?
Also should I try to look for a shop with a track record for volvos, or would any reputable shop know the specific needs for my car?

I would typically recommend using a Volvo shop, but exhaust is a pretty straightforward job for any car. Unless you can find a Volvo shop that does this type of work, I woulnd't stress it too much.
3" DP and 2.5" DP/cat back would be a good setup. Those are the common measurements for the typical upgraded systems (OBX).

How do you get from the standard exhaust flange to the larger diameter downpipe, if you go that route?
