All,
Took the opportunity to do a first drain and fill with Toyota Type IV this evening (@135k miles). Drain plug came out easily, but when I finished draining out the old fluid I took a look at the drain plug and found no magnet in place. Is this normal? Fished around in the sump with my Craftsman magnet-on-a-stick and didn't find anything.
Fluid didn't smell burnt...more of a resinous smell. Not as sharp smelling as new stuff, more mellow. Not pinkish..more of a rich mahogany. Got a little over 3.5 quarts out and put the same back in. Drove around town gently for about 20 minutes and had SWMBO help me check it hot in drive. A bit high at the T of the word HOT. Maybe I didn't get it hot enough. Is 85F the right temp (and would an infrared thermometer pointed at the sump be the right approach if I don't have DICE/VIDA)? Maybe suck a bit of transmission fluid out via the dipstick tube to get the level down.
Plan is to wait 1000 miles and do it again, then one more time, then get in the habit of doing a drain and fill each time I change the oil. Maybe suck a bit of transmission fluid out via the dipstick tube
Missing Transmission Drain Plug Magnet?

Ah. I was expecting a darker grey type of magnet. The PO tended towards dealer maintenance (outside a few stops at JiffyLube for the sake of convenience). Is cleaning off the magnet something the dealer does? In the dealer service records I have from the PO, I see TRANSMISSION FLUID: CHECK/ADJUST at the 37.5k, 60k, and 97.5k intervals. Later ones suggest "CHECKED ALL FLUIDS". Maybe they cleaned it at that time. It was pristine when I pulled it out.

Picked up a reservoir for my vacuum pump and pulled out 6oz of fluid which brought the HOT fluid level down to about the top of the range.
