'98 V70 T5 Knocking sounds

Post by Aphx02 »

Hello all. Need some input for some direction. So this morning, at start up, my V70 began making a loud knocking sound, almost parallel to, it hurts, a rod knock. I checked the oil level, which was good. I haven't starved it from oil, I do occasionally open it up, but not abusive to it. I drove it to work, 10 miles, and will park it to figure out what is wrong with it. Here's a video I tapped at work:

Sounds like an exhaust leak.

Take one of them long plastic transmission funnels and use it as a ear trumpet. See if you can isolate where the sound is coming from.

Sounds like it is internal.
Could it be your water pump impeller?
Check all your belts also, especially the timing belt. A belt could be starting to disintegrate.

It doesn’t change on float, so that points to a main bearing or an accessory.

iPhone recordings distort sounds unfortunately...it does sound like an AC compressor too, though.

It does remind me of the sound a old air compressor makes. When it is idling the sound hints of the chugging a old hit and miss engine makes, only faster. That is why I'm thinking exhaust leak, which is compressed gases. I does not sound like a metal on metal knock.

Thank you all for your input and suggestions. I'll be inspecting the belts and do further diagnosis, and will update on my findings, if any. I love driving my Wagon and will do all I can to keep it on the road.

I do hear a knocking (along with whistling). Not exactly what I'd call a rod knock but who knows.. Maybe related to some valve? Isn't this engine harsh on valve seals? Just a supposition This may help www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVWY2fMzrpc

Maybe also inspect the timing belt tensioner.

A bearing that is worn enough to cause a knocking sound should be dropping oil pressure. At idle is your oil pressure light coming on?

On start-up it sounds eerily similar to the rod knock my S70 T5 had, but after that, I don't know... It's not as harsh

Very similar, but I hope its not that. I'm starting first to check for any exhaust leaks by the turbo, checking my belts, and changing my oil to see for any sediments left behind from a worn bearing.
