Exhaust VVT on an NA? Haven't heard that before.

I think I've seen only one or two 1999 NAs with VVT. Like I said, I think it was a mid year change.

Definitely worth a look see... maybe just keep the head on the car and swap the bottom end if it is VVT!

VVT came in 2000 MY for NAs on intake. The intake port shape is vastly different on a 1998 model but the hole positioning is the same. The earlier ports are smaller and have that top ridge at 12 o clock. Some dremmelling of the head may be required for a better port match.

The 1998 and earlier heads also have the holes drilled to take the coil pack bolts. The biggest issue may be the cam sensor's pickup point. The earlier ones were on the exhaust. The bastards were on the intake. Some mods to the intake cam may be necessary to implement the later system but very doable.

That parts 1999 would be a turbo.

It was definitely NA as I took the ETM without digging.

Then it was a late 99 build probably September or past. Anyway you can't put a intake VVT on exhaust: different part number and it says INTAKE on the casting. If it works OK in the exhaust position it's not meant to.

The early builds had no VVT. Also your parts car would have had solid tappets, identifiable by the extra torx screws near the spark plug holes

If it had VVT it probably had solid lifters. I have a late '99/2000 NA head sitting in my shed right now with intake VVT and it has solid lifters.
