camping Mt Mitchell N.C.

Post by obayha »

The Misses and I headed to Mt Mitchell this weekend for a little camping trip. Mt Mitchell is our highest peak east of the Mississippi, at around 6600 feet. Short compared to the west, but it has very interesting weather and changes all the time. The park has 9 camp sites close to the top of the mountain and at nite the park is closed, so you pretty much have the place to yourself. It was a pretty good day weather wise on Thursday and beautiful on Friday, but Saturday was a bust so we headed to Ashville and spent the day.
Probably put about 500 miles on the 2006 V70 and it just turned to 95,000. Did see a black bear cross the road in front of us on Saturday, but was to slow with the camera. Also saw some wild turkeys and tourist.
Here's the "V" at Laurel Knob overlook, elevation 4602 feet.

Cool! Sounds like you guys had a good time.

Last time I was at Mount Mitchell was 1998, and it was SUPER foggy. We stayed at some lodge up there at the top.

The day after, we went to the top of Grandfather Mtn and walked across the Mile High Bridge.

I was actually just north of you this weekend on the Parkway - I came down to MP 250 or so (just around Sparta), and we stayed in the Fancy Gap area of Virginia.

The weather was both good and bad. It changes about every ten minutes or so. Just went to Cary this past Sunday and getting ready for the next camping trip to Cumberland Island. Pictures to follow.
