2014 xc90- is there a t6 model variant?

A mid-size luxury crossover SUV, the Volvo XC90 made its debut in 2002 at the Detroit Motor Show. Recognized for its safety, practicality, and comfort, the XC90 is a popular vehicle around the world. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America). P2 platform.

2014 xc90- is there a t6 model variant?

Post by volvooh »

I am doing some research for a friend who is looking at a 2014 XC90. I own a few Volvos but nothing that new :D .

Is the t6 variant still in production with the 2014 MY? It is certainly one to stay away from in the 2005ish MY. Not sure if its still in production.

Also, any other stand-out issues to look for in the 2014 MY? All my Volvos run the inline 5...not as familiar with the newer models.

After 2011, in North America it's just the 3.2l normally aspirated inline 6 cylinder- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_SI6_engine, lots of posts about the powerplant on this site and others.

The T6 that's normally (and negatively) referred in the earlier generation XC90 is the 2.9l twin turbo 6 cylinder engine and it's the 4T65EV/GT transmission that's the issue, not the engine. It's a twin turbo 6 cylinder variant of the tried and true 5 cylinder so nothing to worry about there. This powertrain was offered just from 2003 to 2006 IIRC.

Another similar thread to this (asking about post 2011 reliability, etc.) on the XC90 forum somewhere, if I can find I'll edit and post the link.

Actually the 6 cylinder was the first modular engine released in production for the 960. The 5 cylinder came later in the 850. June

The turbo variant of the 3.2L six is fitted to the smaller AWD XC70 T6 from 2007-2016 which makes no sense at all seeing as they all share the same transmission and the heavier XC90 NEEDS more power due to its extra weight.

Why Volvo didn't create a T6 variant astonishes me as the transmission handles the torque of the V8 without issue.
