Random limp mode possible ecm issue

Post by Dread »

2001 volvo s60 2.4L none turbo. The car will go into limp mode at random times. Sometimes nothing for a month. Sometimes instanly after i clear the errors. Everytime it goes into limp mode, i get the errors shown on the dash in pictures i provided. I’m using the icarsoft vol ii for diagnostics . I have also provided pictures what its telling me. When i clear out messages/ codes the car runs great. What im trying to make sure is if its the ECM or the engine wiring? Any information would greatly be appreciated. Other than what i have described the car is a Gem no other problems.

The I car-soft should produce specific codes. Was it communication problem with throttle to ECU? This would be CEM-1A5D error?

That’s partly why I’m puzzled . It’s not giving me an error code at all. I’ll try updating the icarsoft maybe it’s got a glitch. UPDATE: I reloaded the firmware on the icarsoft but still no DTC codes. I unpluggged the electronic throttle body and the car ran smooth. I have no problem buying a new one if this could be the problem.

That's why we keep recommending Vida/Dice on this forum.....if it's a P2 series or late P80 it's the only thing that can get in there and produce codes accurately apart from expensive garage scanners.

Really odd that unplugging a throttle should make it run smooth. I dare say it won't DRIVE smoothly without a throttle connection.

If it's the original white label throttle you were on borrowed time anyway

I don’t think disconnectingthe ETB will test much, but if you aren’t getting error codes when you do that try another diagnostic. You should have a Christmas tree of Comm errors without a connected ETB

The ETB probably sits open at a few % , the fuel will be metered per the MAF, so the engine will happily idle

I used my cellphone and took pictures. I do believe its original white label. Im posting pictures for second opinion to make sure. Also on top of that i think the blasted thing is a junkyard pull do to finding numbers and letters written on it next to the label. To me thats a warning sign right there alone.

It was built in 2001 February. That's even more of a warning sign. Being a non turbo you have very little reason to suspect anything else. Vacuum lines are few and far between and would only produce rich codes or O2 sensor codes.

Some Denso O2 sensors can put the non turbos in limp mode so that should be checked out.

Correct current number for a rebuilt unit for your car is 36050564 .. Old number was 8644345 or 8644344. For most of 2015 and 2016 it was 36001821. This number suits naturally aspirated P2 V70s and S60s from 2001 and 2002.
Tasca do a VIN check at checkout before purchase so you can be certain the part in your cart fits your car.

Tasca Parts's current pricing is USD$380.24 (Tasca is a Volvo dealer) They come pre-programmed with 2002 S60 and V70 NA software so it will need programming for your car.

Anyone out there with Vida near Oklahoma who can get this car scanned?

They have 1 feedback in the last month for a Vida purchase. Purchaser thought it can do software download but of course it can't due to licensing however the buyer was pleased that it worked for diagnostic. You'll need a Windows OS laptop preferably Win 7 Pro or Win 8 however you may need to run it on the Chrome browser due to incompatibilities with IE11

Go for it!
