Started disassembling the tb and almost got everything off except for that stupid lower 10mm bolt that attaches the lower timing belt cover.
That bolt is corroded badly and by now quite rounded off (a 3/8 wrench or socket still grips tight, but slips off because i is ao rusty). Deblock oil and heat didn't impress the bolt too much either.
As far as i see i have 2 options:
1) dremel off the bolt's head and then later just secure the cover with the upper bolt or
2) try to take off the serpentine belt pulley. How would i do that? By opening the 30mm nut?
What's the better solution?

Removing the crank pulley isn't too hard. Remove the 4 smaller screws, then remove the 30mm nut. It may take some persuasion (may want to use a puller), but the pulley should pull off at that point. You'll probably want a counter-hold of some type on the crank pulley, though, so that it doesn't rotate while you're loosening/tightening the bolts and nut.
I would probably do that before dremeling off the screw for the shield just due to simplicity, unless it's somewhat easy to access. However running it with one screw shouldn't be a problem, I'm pretty sure that's how my cousin is running his on his S70.

In all my Volvo wrenching I've actually never taken off the crank pulley. Would you want to block the crank (so it doesn't rotate) through that little hole up near the starter, if you do that?
And what about one of those bolt removal sockets with all the teeth, for rounded bolt heads?

I don't have that fcp tool to hold the pulley and i've read horror stories about that 30mm nut and not being able to open or torque it down properly. But then, it probably is the better way...

Erik, I had that idea wirg these bolt extraction sockets, but you van't really access them with a ratchet bigger than 1/4 and can't apply too much pressure because of the weird angle

Picture? Long time since I did an 850 TB but can't think of the bolt you are trying to remove.

It's one of these strange bolts with only a short thread close to the head and the rest of the bolt having no thread at all.
That photo should be turned 90 degrees clockwise.

Ok that plate! It looks awfully dry so firstly spray it with a good penetrating oil and let it soak. Use the end of a socket extension and a hammer or a metal punch and hammer and give it a few taps on the head of the bolt to see if you can shock it free.
Otherwise the use of a wobble extension and one of the rusted bolt extractors is what I would try.

This only looks dry in the upper part where the bolt came off easily. I drained that bolt, from the inside and out, torched it, hammered on it and and whatnot ... Got bolt extractors this morning (only got cheap quality locally) and of course rounded off the nut even more. I´m about to start dremeling away soon, I guess. I just hope that shield will still be in place with one bolt because it looks like there is not too much else preventing it from rubbing against the belt...
