Hi all,
This is my first post ever, so please bear with me. I recently purchased an older (2004) XC90 in great shape. But, because it is now 14 years old, there are a few things going wrong with it. One of which, the CCM (climate control module).
I can adjust the speed of the fan, but I cannot adjust the temperature of the air blowing out. This means that when the temperature reading on my dash says below 60 degrees F, the car blows out hot air. When it is above 60, ice cold AC. So, it seems that there is some type of sensor that is telling the CCM to blow either hot/cold air, but I'm not sure. I have purchased a used CCM on eBay for around $50 and was thinking about replacing the one in my car. This is what my independent mechanic told me to do. Then, I would obviously have to get the CCM "married" to the car.
Are there any suggestions on what to do? Should I try something before replacing the CCM? Is there a small part that can be replaced so I don't have to change the whole CCM (not that it's a problem if I do, I already have it). I'm just wondering.
This is a great site, thank you to all the people who have contributed.

That is correct, the temperature knobs do absolutely nothing to adjust the actual temperature. I'm happy that my A/C and Heat work, but it would be nice to be able to adjust the temperature of those things.

Never worked since you bought it?
Check thermistor behind the little slotted section on the climate panel, make sure it's intact and not broken/bent. Area of the slotted section should be clean and free of debris (blow out or vacuum if not). See attached for reference- https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?p=886879
Some references in posts to CCM software reload, some suggest an outright CCM replacement is the solution. Could well be a CCM module problem but won't hurt to start with easy stuff first.

It worked when I bought the car, but it stopped working shortly after we bought it. I'm not sure if anything happened to cause a malfunction or not. Thank you for the reply!

That sounds like a bad CCM. If the part number of the CCM is the same as one in car then it will work and no programming is needed. The switches in the bottom row are of no consequence. Plug them in any of the ports and they will do the job printed on button. The switches plug into a communication buss and the switch sends a signal assigned to that purpose on its emblem. If you plug in a headrest fold switch anywhere it will fold headrests.
