Recommended Engine oil=? 1998 S70 T5 Auto

Post by Ghassan »

Hello guys,

This question has probably been beaten to death in the past, but may someone tell me what is the recommended engine oil for my car? Please note that I have checked the owner's manual thoroughly and it shows a table that displays 3 oil types and one of them is grayed out.

1. 5W-30 (minus 30deg C to +30deg C)
2. 5W-40 (minus 30deg C to +40deg C)
3. 10W-30 (minus 20deg C to +40deg C) (grayed out)

Note that from the above description in the owners manual (page 124) it is not clear why one should consider the 1st option since that band of operation is already overlapped by the 2nd option (i.e. 5W-40). Furthermore, the manual does not make a clear statement that the table is to be used for oil type selection. Please advise. Thanks.

My car consumes between 4 to 5 litres of oil btw oil changes (every 8000km) and I use synthetic oil only. I switch between 5W-30 and 10W-30 oils. My car has 320,000km on factory original drivetrain.

The oil table can be found here:

The grayed out is the preferred oil. I do the same as you...5W-30 in winter 10W-30 in warmer months, but you live in Canada. I would say if you get below -30 C weather up there, use what's appropriate for your climate but with the "30" as the last number. What that 30 means is that at top temperatures the oil acts as an SAE-30 oil. It's only the lower temperatures that really matter (ie: cold crank).

Might want to have that oil consumption looked into, it's on the high side.
