What cv axles can be used on an 850?
My CV boots are split. I was thinking about replacing the axle as a unit. Anybody know if a used cv axle from a s60 would work?

I don't think so. In the '99 model year they changed even the P80s to a different fastening system to hold the outside of the axle. Rather than the giant nut that threads onto the axle they went to a smallish bolt that threads into the end of the axle. I have never worked on a S60 but they tend to be fairly consistent on changes like that throughout the entire lineup.
If it were me and the axles are otherwise OK I would just reboot them. I have had good luck buying GKN Lobro boots from NAPA and we have some writeups in the repair database to help you through the process.

I'm sure you're right. I just happen to have a s60 in my local salvage yard and thought it would be a simpler approach. If I'm working on something unfamiliar I always try it on a salvage car before my own if I can.

Re-boot or find a junkyard with a P80 car (94-98 850 or x70) and intact axles. Buying new is giving up on ever having good axles.
