1998 s70 no power when in gear,no codes, limp, PnP?

Post by adventurer2112 »

Hi All,
98 S70 Na, 137 K auto. No power when put in gear. I’ve had a few limp home modes, with no codes or po 0410. Clear the codes, fine for months. No codes, no flashing arrow. Back up lights work. Took much rowing of shifter 20 times. Car would have to be off for a few minutes. Of course the coolant tank was empty, wet under carpet. So heater core removal and block testing liquid.

I’m thinking some weird electrical glitch. Any experience / suggestions?thanks in advance.

Could this be a simple PnP failure? All that rowing is pointing that way.

Thanks abscate,
Wouldn’t that P n P failure generate a code or the flashing arrow? Or warning symptoms?
0410 2ndary air injection is all I’ve gotten.
The only consistency has been the alarm system arming failed. Immobilized system no longer works. Replaced the trunk locking assembly. I’m going to do the heater core bypass to get effective cooling to do a block test.
TIA
Jack

If you could describe what it is doing a bit more it would help. Does it rev up and not move or does it move but feel like you are dragging a safe behind you? Does it rev way up without moving and then catch?

The symptom where it moves when you accelerate but it does so slowly is typical for "limp mode" and it is usually a PNP. I have had it get stuck in limp mode even without the typical flashing up arrow and it usually goes back to a bad PNP.

Step one is to check the fluid and observe the color and odor. If it is low it can cause it to rev and then finally catch and move. If it is dark or smell burned then a fluid change may help you out. If it revs but doesn't move in any gear then things get more serious.

Revs up great but does not move. I wait 5 minutes, while rowing the shifter. Then start car from
Park, in drive it moves and shifts to 2 Nd gear. Try to drive above that and loses power. Fluid level good, color ok but am draining & fill. So I would keep it at low speed but still would not drive more than a few blocks without losing power.
Thanks

Hi All,
Drained fluid, old but not brown, no burnt smell. Of course it drove off ramps fine. Too scared to drive it further without heater core bypass.
I’m uncomfortable with the unreliable ness now.

Hi ,All,
Didn’t make it 1/2 way around the block. From a cold start, will deliver enough power to move, but not for long. Revs up great, no power. No codes, no flashing arrow. Heater core by pass done & replaced engine ground strap to firewall. Ordered Caig Deoxit to clean every electrical connection.

Hi All,
Engine runs fine.
Installed new PnP switch. put it in drive, coded 0705. cleared code with OBD2 reader. unhooked battery for an hour. Hooked battery back up and no codes, no flashing arrow. Car drove around the block, then would not move, even if I revved it up. Turn it off for 5 minutes, Turn it back on and it drove well for about 2 blocks, TRIED to accelerate but it would not, then no power to the wheels. Even if i sit for 5 minutes in park, the tranny wont send power to the wheels. NO CODES except a secondary air system engine code. No transmission codes.

It works for a few minutes. Help! Is this transmission failed fluid pressure internally? Intermittent electrical short? Computer module fault that doesnt show up with an obd2 code reader?

I am going to put it up on jack stands and see if the CV axles are seated. What else can you suggest?
Thanks
