I don't understand why you'd pick these over normal clamps that are cheaper, reusable, and don't require a special pair of pliers.

Oetiker clamps are designed so that they are spring loaded. That is they will "breathe" along with expansion and contraction. In my experiment with Zip ties I'm betting on the elasticity of nylon to do the same.

There's two types of screw (worm gear) clamps, the german ones are less prone to loosen with vibrations, while the hardware ones always loosen up. Imo, these may not stay tight enough, especially with temperature variation. Maybe the german one is safer but the problem here is playing with the rack - it's a bad and expensive job on this car.

Another reason, screw clamp dug in and ripped it.

More accurate is probably that overtightening damages stuff. You can break pretty much anything using a screw on clamp if you tighten it enough.

I do agree the type with punched holes in the metal band cause more damage but the other kind is cheap enough that there's no reason to use the poor ones.

One (minor) thing I like about Oetiker clamps vs the worm screw type is that once they're tight they don't leave an excess "tail" hanging out to rake the back of your hand across.

I just added a quarter turn to the existing clamp and my leaks stopped :-)

I’ll try that but a quarter turn in the clamp screw will work better.
