This right-hand and left-hand traffic thing.. must cost car makers a fortune to design and produce the two configurations for the same vehicle..

Yeah.

Sweden did it a bit differently when we drove on the left (we switched in the 60s). All the cars were still with the driver on the left like the rest of the world. Even the ones we made here.

?! Are you saying, before Högertrafikomläggningen (3 September 1967), Sweden was operating Left hand drive cars on the left side of the road? That would of put the driver on the outside edge of the road rather then the center of the road.

That was the case, yes. Thus all old cars here now has the driver on the "correct" side. Probably because most of the countries around us that made cars did it that way and we wanted to have an easier time both importing and exporting cars.

Wasn't driving in the 60s suicidal by definition anyway?

The RH and LH thing: the HVAC is the biggest thing and on many Volvo models over the years the HVAC was centered and would work RH and LH. All the early ones through the 240s had the centered versions. Later ones had a mirror image HVAC case to deal with it. On most the change is only the blower part moves as heater core and a/c evaporator are center case housed.
If you look at 240s they have bolt in panels in firewall that were made in LH and RH versions and the rest of the body stamping was the same. This is how SPA is done now. The steering gear and wipers are made in reverse versions too. On many the RH wiper mount brace is there in cowl.

I know some Swedes that were around on that Wednesday. They said it was scheduled mid week to assure everyone was forced to deal with it and couldn't avoid it and put it off and cause problems. All the signs had been erected and covered in the months before and overnight an army of citizens hired or volunteered uncovered the new and covered the old signage.
