2004 Window and door lock sticking

2004 Window and door lock sticking

Starting about four months ago, my door locks and windows would periodically not work. Of late, it's about every other day. Oddly, I used to be able to turn off the engine once or twice, and open and shut the door and it would work. Of late, it's becoming more difficult. Ironically, it never affects the driver side window. Can't think it would be a fuse problem since it is on and off. I dread going to the dealer as I know I would not get out for less than $500 but I also don't want to have to tear down the door, etc. if someone has an answer to this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Original battery in the car? If not, when was it replaced? Odd things happen when the car battery gets tired, lots of posts reflect this as a common area of concern for older cars.

Wish it was a little more straight forward, DDM/PDM controls front door locks, REM controls rear door locks. Common to both modules are CEM and UEM over CAN. That it's affecting all doors is probably NOT a door specific wire problem but cannot hurt to check the connectors at all the door interfaces for broken or compromised wires, just to be sure.

Could also try a new 2032 battery in the remote, lock and unlock a few times, see if anything changes.

No issues with the siren module or sunroof? UEM, SRM, and SCM share a data path, if the siren module is bad (internal NiCad battery leaks over time), it could possibly cause a problem with the UEM and this could be reflected in inconsistent locking and unlocking.

Maybe start with the remote and/or car battery and work your way around the problem.

Thanks! Battery is brand new but going to walk through the diagram. I will try to find two other posts I saw on this very problem.

I can't believe it was this easy, BUT...

I found this on an Andrew Peng website (https://andrewpeng.net/cars/2006-volvo- ... ent-413786) IT WORKED, FIRST TIME!!!!

got my car back from a garage that didn’t specialize in Volvos and since then, the auto-up function on the passenger side door hasn’t worked. The window will roll up, close, then open again. The only way to close the window was to only pull the switch halfway to the non-auto up function and wait for the window to close.

I had thought there was something wrong with the window regulator module so I didn’t think much of it until I came across this post on the Volvo XC forums – this “reset” the PDM (passenger door module) and now the auto-up function works again.

I’ve reprinted the steps to reset the door modules in the hopes that it will help someone else:

Open the fusebox cover on the driver’s side of the dash facing the door.
Close the affected window. Make sure car is ON (position II) or running. Locate the fuse for the affected door module (either #5 or #6).
Open the affected window, and while the window is moving down, remove the fuse for the door module.
Wait a second and then insert the fuse.
Close the affected window by holding the switch all the way up (as if you were using the auto-up function) and hold the switch in the auto-up position at least 5 seconds after the window closes.
Test the auto-down and auto-up function – it should be working now! If it still does not work, you will need to use a scan tool that can scan the passenger or driver’s side door modules.

It's the Hall sensor in the window motor assembly, something gets honked up and it gets out of sync. Maybe once I year I have to do a window on one of my cars, sure good for folks to know how to do it when it happens to them. This method has proven itself 100% reliable over many years, just need to follow the instructions. Never had to do a rear window, always a front.

But what does that have to do with your not being able to reliably lock and unlock your doors ? Maybe need to add some more detail to the original concern, locks is what I thought the issue was but maybe I was not reading closely enough.

Good point! I am techno-impaired so have NO idea why. However, they are all in sync. Go figure.
