2004 V70 stalling, intermittant

Post by arbop »

My 2004 V70 has been great, but yesterday got a check engine light, no messages, then less than a minute later, the car shut off. Coasted to the side of the road, tried to start it, one sputter, then nothing. Tried again, it cranked, but didn't even attempt to start. Of course, when the tow truck got there, it started, and was driven onto the flatbed. Now, at the shop, starts every time. Not fully confident in the car at this point, any suggestions?

Thanks

Always tough to diagnose an intermittent fault.

Next time it stalls, do a quick measurement of fuel pressure at the rail - then diagnose the fuel delivery best you can..

CEM feeds power to PEM feeds power to the fuel pump.

CEM - Central Electronics Module
PEM Pump Electronics Module

P2 cars don't have the classic fuel pump relay failure like P80s.

Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't thought of that, was thinking more in the area of crankshaft position sensor. One more thing to check, LOL

OK, of course, the car has been running fine for the past week, but took it to my garage to have it looked at more closely. They say the codes point to the fuel pump. They suggest changing the pump, or checking the pump electrically to be sure. Neither option sounds easy or inexpensive. They also feel that the Pump Electronics Module is probably not available through the dealer any more.

Thoughts?

Thanks

That garage doesn't know Volvo. The original pumps on these cars last forever (unlike other cars).

If they point the pump go as above first see if the PEM is under the car and see if it has corrosion on it - buy used off Ebay tons available

Them jump at the FPS (google)

If the PEM is on top of the trunk, you can remove it with one bolt , open it carefully, and clean it with contact cleaner in a spray. If it has a pile of Al corrosion in it, that’s probably the problem
