Stock 855R Spring Colour Code Help

Post by daboil »

Replaced my 855R (manual estate with AC and sunroof) front springs but it sits higher than before and ride a little softer. Not sure if I am just imagining it. Dealers in UK are hopeless and they are genuine dealer springs supposedly for my model. I've been told that the springs are colour coded with a patch of paint. What should I look for or does anyone have the stock code? I have 3546640 white marked. Picture shows front shocks. Rears need to be done and sits a bit low due to work Nivomats :(

If I recall correctly the 850 is the same as the first gen V/S/C 70 models. On the VIN tag there should be a set of 7 or 8 digits at the bottom row to the RHS of the plate by the battery.

On that there is a list of letters and numbers. If you can post that we can check which springs you should have. The new springs do take a while to settle after fitting but I'd say the front height looks ok, and the rear as you say is rather low.

Great thanks for the reply. Doesn't just feel a bit high but the ride is a little softer too. I was expecting it to be harder due to being new.

If you replaced the struts as well it might be a bit softer. But in my opinion the car sits too high for an R. My R is lower in the front. But then I still have the old springs, need to reolace them someday soon before they aren't available anymore.

To check if the ride height is correct compare your photo to Volvo's press photos from 1996.

Thank you. I bought from a dealer and gave them all My Car details. Now they are on it looks and feels wrong. Hard to say looking at press photos but I could do with knowing which colour code should be on. Apparenlty it can be determined from my VIN plate. Any ideas? Springs colour coded and am sure they have supplied me with the wrong ones :(

Weird. Looking at Vida, I cannot find the spring/strut combo 1T that your Vin plate would say it should be. So no idea. I can find a listing for the front strut for an 850R but it does not help for the spring. Strut # 9173850 for the front. Volvo did offer a lowering spring kit, so perhaps yours were lowered and you have now got standard height?

Volvo should be able to print off the original spec for your car and hope if lowered springs were fitted it was from new and lists that?

Hi thank you for looking. I'll get onto them today and see what they say. Really appreciate the help. Do you know which ones were a the lowered springs by any chance? Is it the blue ones?

What I can say is that the 96R rear nivomat springs were blue and yellow. And all Rs should have been eqipped with the lowering springs
