Just chinning in and hopefully not diverting from the ongoing conversation. Not often times is insomnia really rewarding but this night I was chewing through some Youtube videos only to stumble on this interesting episode of Chris Harris about a legendary Le Mans cars, the Porsche 962 from the 90's. Besides the performance of the car (top speed of 240mph), the video has something unique in it - the chief designer Norbert Singer shares a few mechanical difficulties when designing such high performance vehicle. Enter for a few seconds the secret world of car racing engineering.

It's like a Volvo 440 that got over-inflated
The Ford Megastar II was a five-passenger, wedge-shape concept that rode on a 101-inch wheelbase, and powered by a two-liter four-cylinder engine. Its two-door aluminum body had an extended front section, and short, squaretail rear, designed to benefit stability and fuel economy. Copper-tinted windshield and door glass blended with the honey-colored velvet-like upholstered material. Ford displayed the first Megastar prototype at the 1978 Chicago, which was fitted with a three-liter V-6.

Well done Subaru! The 2019 Subaru Ascent is the first non Volvo car whose crash tests are as impressive as Volvo. Watching the small overlap it could easily have been a XC90 with the smooth angling away from the passenger compartment and collapsing breakaway rim. I really like to see other companies as serious as Volvo about safety. In the last few years all companies have been doing better, but this is the first non Volvo crash test that appears as good as Volvo in ALL impact tests.

Still the majority of cars bounce off the barrier in the small overlap test which tends to be the type of crash that is most deadly as far as head on crash. To see another company making a car that angels the impact away allowing the car to effectively slide by the barrier rather than bounce off is a milestone. I am sure that Subaru is more affordable than the XC90 and will allow more people to enjoy the benefits of a safer car who otherwise would not. June

Volvo Tundra was a concept car built and designed by Bertone in 1979. Bertone was told to do "something delicious" based on the Volvo 343. It was rejected by Volvo who thought it was too modern and difficult to sell. Bertone instead sold a very similar design to Citroën where it was produced as Citroën BX.[1]

The car featured a digital speedometer and was powered by a 1.4 litre four cylinder engine giving 70 hp.

It really has no appeal....it looks like a "cargo" vessel
