Unknown no start possible fuel issue? Maybe purge valve

Post by Aggnizzab »

Ok so I ran with the fuel light on for about 30 miles my fiance put gas then we got a no start condition. About 4 hours later went to the car to check it out myself and she fired right up. Then got home she refired several times no issues. Next day fires right up get to appointment about 30 minutes away stay at appointment for 2 hours then go to start... No start . Have her towed home the next day she starts but dies right away. I have check the valve on the fuel rail I have a steady clean stream, I hear my fuel pump, I feel and hear my fuel injector relay and the the pump relay I replaced the fuel pump fuse, fully charged the battery and I just keep getting the same the a start then stall out then no start. I do know I have a bad 02 sensor. And I just rebuilt the fuel pump relay harness thingy. I think purge valve maybe but don't know the proper way to check or locate it ! Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated. I am also working on a budget and a self taught mechanic lol self teaching I play mechanic

A purge valve shouldn't cause a no start condition under any circumstances. I have had hard starts and generally poor performance after the gas tank was overfilled though. I think what happens is that the charcoal canister floods with gasoline and and raw gas gets sucked into the intake rather than vapors. That problem self corrects after a few starts and a hundred miles or so with no permanent damage.

The fuel pump failures I have had, no matter the make of car, all came just after I ran the tank near empty but it sounds like you have done the proper tests and the fuel pump is OK.

I am guessing crank position sensor.

Remove fuel pump relay and put a paper clip between pins 15 & 87 in order to rule out bad fuel pump relay.
Other than that..i would say that fuel pump pick-up screen is clogged from dirt in the tank since you drove it almost with empty tank before re-fueling.

I spent months chasing an electrical or fuel issue. The car would have trouble starting, but intermittently.

Finally replaced the starter (170,000 mile original) and that fixed the issue. Usually the solenoid just dies, but these Bosch starters are so good, that they just slowly go out.

There is a BIG difference between NO START & NO CRANK condition.

It cranks and attempts to start just won't . Crank crank crank just does the same thing won't fire up

When my starter solenoid was acting up, I would get a crank with no start or a rough start. I was 99% sure it was a fuel issue. What happened was the crank was too weak to start the engine because it was an intermittent crank. But it was more of a stumble crank.

OK, if it cranks and cranks like normal, then I agree, it's not the starter. But it still sounds electrical. I would double check your fuel pump relay harness, since you just worked on that.
