Answered a Craigslist ad for a 2003 S40, 109,000 miles, Cranks no start, don't know whats wrong, $500.00.

Timing belt is stretched but not broken. Bought it betting the timing belt jumped just enough to create the no start condition but not interference. OEM timing and water pump kit from IPD on the way.

Exterior: Body straight, only four dings smaller then a dime. Some minor scratches in the clear coat none to the paint. Some paint chipping on the front bumper cover, which can be touched up. Black plastic trim pieces need redyed. Grille and headlight cleaners need replaced.

Interior: Headliner needs some attention other than that no reconditioning needed.

Most stuff is fixable, but the biggest issue is the leaking fuel tank. It will need to be dropped along with the rear sub-frame to access the top of the tank. There are several rubber hoses on the top of the tank that are specially made (not standard round hoses) that are no longer available. Creativity may be able to overcome this. The main filler tube from the filler metal pipe to the tank is also now NA.

LEaking rear seals in the axle can be done without removing the rear sub-frame but is not a 5 minute job. Keep the diff topped up.

The diff cannot be removed without dropping the rear sub-frame if you can't get access.

If you are considering the car check the rear bushes carefully as there are 2 types that are NA.

Several of the brand parts mentioned I personally would not use as they have short lifespans (Meyle).

The smoke could be the PCV needing serviced or leaking turbo seals or valve stem seals.

If you want to buy this car, even with the spares (check the prop-shaft is the correct one for model/year and middle rubber donut is good and no play in the front joint) check it over very carefully and get it up on a hoist. Also expect lots of unexpected repairs.

The EG exterior is in great shape looks nice but IMO that one's way overpriced for a base model, unless the service records are amazing. 88k is low but it also means all of the suspension is about to go out, ETM probably hasn't been changed yet. Despite being "fully loaded" and "6 cylinders" there is no sun roof, probably no trip computer (OK yes I am guessing ...).

All good points your making, Erik.
However, if you can snatch this up for maybe just under 3k I think it's well worth it, considering all the other junk you see for just below that.
Most of the P80's around $2000 to $2500 are pretty run down with a lot more miles, at least in this neck of the woods. And those cars need a lot more than a suspension refresh and ETM. Also, some people don't mind owning an NA car (myself included)

I was being picky, you're right there is a lot of junk out there. The good ones are fewer and farther between.
