Re: Battery Not charging

Post by cracra »

Well the other night none of them were coming on, also when my drivers door open and keys in ignition the bell was not going off either. But, when i moved the button on the inside door jam it would go off, so I am thinking maybe a short. As for my warning light usually they do come on, yet for some reason the other night they did not.

I am seriously thinking it is my instrument cluster for a couple different reasons. 1st I read a post on here by a guy who described his car acting in the same exact way, and his was the instrument cluster. 2nd within the last week when the key is in the on position I can hear a clicking noise that sounds like it is coming from my dash,.Yet having said that I don't hear well out of my left ear so I am not positive that when the clicking is coming from.

Another thing is ever since I bought the car almost 4 years ago, the only gauges that work on my instrument cluster is the gas and temperature gauge. But, within the last I'd say 4 month or so my gas gauge has gained a mind of its own cause some time for no reason the gas gauge will just start going up like it is putting gas in by itself. LOL

I really need someone who is more mechanically inclined to help me.....

Thank you to everyone who has responded and giving me excellent ideas as to were to start. Just waiting for a day off.

Have you thought about the ignition switch? I don’t know if that would have much of an effect on the possible battery drain, but it’s definitely a possibility. That could definitely prevent the warning lights and chime from coming on if it’s not working properly.

I just don’t see how it can have to do with the instrument cluster. Then again, you’ve done some research, I have not.

Get a multimeter and do a parasitic draw test, pull one fuse at a time if there is a high draw. That could certainly narrow things down a little bit.

First things first....inspect positive and negative battery cables...clean connections on both ends (4x) and battery posts (2x).

Then report back your findings.

Check the wiring from the positive battery terminal to the junction box. The 2 red wires at the positive battery terminal broke of and resulted in no power on my 1988 Volvo 760. This would be the power going from the positive battery terminal to the junction box before going though the firewall to the fusebox and ignition switch.

Ask around on Facebook (Volvo Parts/Cars Buy/Sell page, Turbobricks page, and many others) or Turbobricks. Lots of red block parts floating around over there.
Otherwise check out a Pick-N-Pull/Pull-A-Part nearby. That'll be the cheapest and quickest way to get one.

Would this car by chance be a 1991 940SE?

Post over at turbobricks.com....I'm surprised in your area, one can not be found. Don't make a mountain out of a mole-hill.

Well, I have looked and looked and have be unable to find. So thanks but not making mountain out of anything. By all means if you think you can find one knock yourself out. Sorry if i am coming across rude, but I've been dealing with this problem for far to long and don't need some rude comment.
