Tailgate gasket 3512402 across top - shrinking? correct glue?

Post by 850forum »

1986 850 Turbo wagon. There is a horizontal weatherseal gasket across the top , glued to the roof. The glue has failed; what should I use? Also this is a U shape, having short projections aft on both sides; thus it goes around the inside corner of the body roof. Except on the passenger side, it has pulled away. Seems to have shrunk. I see on the driver's side there seems to be a glob of silicon caulk filling a gap in between the inside corner & the gasket. Advice? I don't know if there is a water drain channel exiting in that area, under the gasket., so I would not want to seal it up with caulk.

Need to get this done before it start to rain again. Now going to use solvent to remove glue residue.

Also, the temporary spare has a big hole in it !!! Have not checked it in a couple of years. Can they put a new tire on the rim, or is it a throwaway entirely?

Used paint thinner, rubber cement solvent, acetone & finally lacquer thinner and still cannot get all of the glue residue off.

Spare may be hard to find, but try a dealer. Most used spares will have tires of at least 18 years of age.

May also be worth trying Tirerack. Maybe they have access to that size.

As to the weather seal, I used double sided tape to repair the one on mine. It was a narrow tape for sticking on trim strips I got at a local parts store.

My gasket still has that narrow white tape stuck to it. Its pretty thick, I don't know if doubling the thickness will make a problem with the seal.

Same problem with the round-ish gasket running vertically up either side (& across the top for maybe 6 inches). Narrower white tape on it. Its coming off at the top.

None of the online searches for tires allow you to specify "temporary spare" etc wording. Complete Volvo unit is $250 on Amazon.
Guess I'll have to read the sidewall...

Firestone T115/70R15 90M radial tubeless for a full size 205/50R16
rim marked 400Bx15x57

I note that my Ford from 1994 has a much wider temp spare: T135/70D15 for full size 205/65R15

Wonder if there is room for a full size spare in that wheel well -- should be, so you can stow the flat you changed out. Now they have full size "light weight" spares which hopefully are cheaper -- but I'd have to buy a rim... Still, rather run on a full size for sake of ABS etc.

That wheel well is big enough to swallow a full Volant 17 inch rim with 205/45/R17 rubber. That's how the Rs were equipped from the factory. So any used volvo tire should fit.

I bought a spare replacement from our local chain tire shop, Discount Tire. It was $70.

Had I known a full sized wheel would've fit in there I would've just bought a used rim and tire off CL for ~$25.

I personally have never had luck reattaching that rubber gasket. It just keeps falling off.

That glue was a swine to remove. I tried all the things you did and managed to eventually remove it without removing all the paint but it was close. I think it was acetone or paint thinner I used in the end and a plastic scraper. Try scoring the tape to help the solvent to penetrate the material more easily.

I was thinking of trying to find a plastic spatula for scraping. I've got it down to stretches of residue the thickness of cellophane tape.
Wondering how to get the thick tape off the back of the gasket itself.
Would be better to glue it back on. This suggests polyurethane caulk, or contact cement

I'd like to use something that can be dissolved with solvent. Finding that data is hard.

3M website tool for EDPM rubber (wonder if that's the correct material for the gasket) to painted metal:

IT seems like any product with the 3M label

...costs twice as much as the exact looking product made by the Acme Corporation

Unlike the Acme version, it works.
