XC90 Fan Speed Control Knob Unresponsive

Car: 2005 Volvo XC90 2.5

Issue: Climate control fan speed knob does not respond.

Attempting to adjust the fan speed does not work. The knob does not respond when trying to regulate the blower speed. Periodically the fan will adjust itself (and the number of green lights will change) or I may be able to adjust the speed manually but then it goes back to being unresponsive.

I have uploaded a video to demonstrate the issue. The URL is below. If anyone has noticed a similar problem or can suggest diagnostics or parts I should check that would be great.

The blower works on AUTO and defrost but I cannot manually regulate the fan speed.

Most of what I have seen in searching the forums is related to the blower not working and to replace the resistor and motor. The blower motor and resistor were recently replaced with new parts but this did not correct the problem. Thoughts?

BUMP. Same problem in '05 S60R. Don't really want to replace the whole CCM. Anyone?

- I own a Pioneer Home Stereo, the volume knob did the same. Turned out to be "Pioneer new encoder part # ASX7004".
Google this and you will see what I mean.

- Back to the Volvo fan speed knob, I think you probably have the "encoder" issue. An encoder is basically a digital device that allows you to turn the volume (in a home stereo) or blower motor (car).

- Your best bet is to visit a junk yard and get a used HVAC panel and see what happens.

If you're going to replace the CCM with used, you'll want to get one that's exactly the same as what you have in the car today.

Lots of different part numbers for this item (chassis is last 6 of VIN)-
PN 8682734 CH <134247

PN 30782329 CH 328000-650000
PN 31346603 CH >650001

I'm not sure if you need to calibrate the new CCM to the car after install, someone else can confirm. But it's my impression that if you do a direct PN swap, it'll work from the get-go.

I have the same issue in my CCM. The fan speed knob is unresponsive. Did you find how to solve the issue?
