Alright, apologies for the crude title, but we've seriously gotta find some sort of permanent solution for this door lock.
When the lock actuator failed, I first got another one from the junkyard. When that failed, I took the one I had and ripped it apart, finding the problem, a bad motor, as I was expecting.
But a new actuator? At least a few hundred bucks. I don't have that kind of money.
I heard that there is some sort of temperature switch inside of the motor, but I've failed to open the metal casing. It's on there pretty good.
I've floated the idea of completely replacing this latch with the wire latch from the later S70 series and whatnot, but it would ruin the look of the interior once I put the door panel back on.
I'm pretty sure that this is the only model which Volvo put these in, so I'm at a standstill. What should I do?

The motors from an S70 will be no better. The thermal resistor in the motor is a known and widespread failure point. I ended up tearing apart all 4 latch assemblies in my S70 and performed the fix from this video:
Not sure if the 850 has the same problem with the motors, but you need to be persistent with getting the metal tabs bent out to take the motor apart.

You must have some kind of problem which keeps blowing the motors.
Maybe the fuse is unapropriate rating...I would expect it to blow first before the motor. If it's just 5 A stronger it will not blow but it will burn the motor instead or melt the wiring...in the worst case.
Could be that wiring is shorted somewhere causing the motor to blow too.
I bought the car from new and never had any kind of problems except notorious fuel door lock, which was fixed looong time ago.

If you are lucky the motor may not be burned out but the motor brushes may be worn. Try opening the motor up.
Look on line for a SAAB website that shows how to re-build a headlight wiper. It shows how to strip the motor. In fact the motor looks a lot like the ones used in headlight wiper motors and you used to be able to find them for sale on line. Using the info on the motor do a search and see if you can find the manufacturer or a similar motor.
Motors wear out but unless there is something causing the window to bind, they don't often fail like misha mentions.
Neil.
