200 V70 Boost and v.e. 2-3 Shift issue?

ok this might be a bs thread.
When i got my v70 xc it ran about 5psi
Put a manual boost control (by pass style)
To no avail
I worked on the bov, found that the spring was week, so i made it adjustable.
Still 5 psi
So i did the old jamacan wastegate preload.
10 psi. Ok now what right?
Tire fryer
So becouse i like the car i cut it back
9 psi, great power (i thought) until i lost to a 200k civic
And on the 2-3 it struggled to upshift, (either lack of fuel or trans issue.

So i backed it down to 8 psi
2-3 doesnt struggle, and power is better than before, but why the issues on the 2-3 shift?

I believe it need more fuel, so what im thinking is a gtx 3076 r, at about 8 psi, but am i going to run into the laggy shift again? Thistime becouse of valume and not pressure?

Please no bs keyboard mechanic crap. If your rolling a stock volvo and cant change your oil please dont say anything leave it for someone who knows please

Not me, i prefer to do all my own work, every mechanic makes mistakes, if you dont know their flaws it could be a death sentance where i live.

Something you dont mention is if you altered the computer tune? It seems to me on a computer controlled engine if you want to nearly double the boost psi mechanically, the computer tune should be set for the new boost parameter? I can't imagine changing the turbo to a Garret unit to achieve the same boost psi would change anything as you are already achieving the boost psi desired with bad result.

I believe there is a tune specialist on here that can customize your tune to accommodate the physical changes you may desire to make. June

Ah very good note, no i havent been able to afford a tune. However everyone forgets that engines always make power, the engine is only under boost during acceleration.
Therefore since its 8 psi at 2500 rpm wot, and only 6psi maybe 5, at 4500rpm wot.
The issue isnt boost pressure it is valume and flow, my question was if i increase the flow, in and out is the factory tune going to have the same problem as it did on 10psi witch had 0 boost drop at high rpm, but a laggy 2-3 shift and loss of power

Like i said im looking for a mechanic not a keyboard warrior

The 1999-2001 P80 models are running Bosch ME7 management software which is less forgiving than the earlier versions.

Running stock wastage more than 2 turns off factory has been reported to bend rods - careful with that boost!

When was your transmission oil last serviced? 2-3 flare/shift delay is often a sign it is way passed due. When the fluid is done, the gear changes in these 2 are often slow and sudden.

I asked my husband who was a dealer mechanic until he found welding pays better. Mike said OBD 2 can only handle a maximum of 30% increase of air 20% safely. He said at 30% air increase your stock injectors are wide open and not where you want to be. Also by increasing boost psi you are increasing the compression ratio. He said likely your shift problem is likely a result of the knock sensor hearing knock from either a lean condition or knock from compression causing the computer to attempt to stop the knock. End result will be power loss. He said you can expect to either blow the engine or transmission or both in their stock 20yo condition.

He said if you want to increase flow past 20% larger injectors, remapping the computer, and possibly a higher flow mass airflow sensor depending on how crazy you want to go. Also he said the added airflow needs to be able to exit the engine. rebuilding the engine and transmission with performance in mind would be required and beefed up axles to handle the torque would also be needed. He says your best bet for more power out of a old car is a tune without all the extra boost.

Volvo actually makes crazy fast cars. You just did not buy one. A few years ago when the S60 Pollstar was hitting 0 to 60 in under 3 seconds I really thought about ordering one as a occasional use car, but it would have cost me my marriage. In hindsight I wish I had bought one... June

B523t3,15k miles, new trans, new turbo supposedly.
Trans and engine have been replaced, and the local dealer did a terrible job. However after correcting those issues the car seems fine.
Now i think ive gotten my answer,

A larger turbo will make more power with less pressure. The only difference i should see is at higher rpm, where the boost wont drop.

As far as the power loss thing ill bet it was poor fuel considering there are guys running 13psi dependably, the oil cap dont hold the crankase pressure but the rods hold up ok, its the sleeves they tend to crack.

That said it doesnt matter if its 100 cfm or 10,000 8 psi is 8 psi

And volvos arent just fast, yes they have a high top speed, but a honda accelerates just as quickly. Without boost, under 2 litres
