My car has the green plastic clip and no clamp, and I'm unable to budge the hose following the directions of "squeeze the green clip, push in , then pull out."
Any idea? I could spray some PBlaster in there, but I don't want to contaminate the new fluid.

Did you push in, give it a slight "twist" and then pull out? My '04 V70 has the same clips and that worked fine....

OK, I give, after all these great instructions... I can't even find the trans fill tube. Where are you guys hiding it?
I had my 01 xc70 to the dealer today as it is Ka-thunking while waiting at lights (when the green means go happens) and they tell me the fluid is low and 3 solenoids are sticking... that I should not bother doing the software upgrade, and that I should just replace the trans.
I decided I would throw a seafoam treatment in there, drive it for about 20 miles and then do the flush-o-rama. I figured if I can replace the intake manifold gasket and vacume pump on a 82 GMC 6.2 diesel and chance my own oil, this shouldn't be too bad. I figured it was my last hope at getting a few more miles out of the trans.
What do you folks think... is it going to help or ensure an immediate trans failure and I am just better off topping it off and looking for a good used or rebuilt trans supplier and someone who can put it in my car?
Please advise! Keep in mind I have a 98 Jag parked in the driveway with a blown head gasket... so cheaper is better... (yes, I am an idiot)

'01's are notorious for bad transmissions. Sorry to tell you that. You could try the flush but I would probably do a drain and fill instead, considering the condition of your transmission already. Oh, and you will either have to use Mobil-3309 or Volvo's own tranny fluid or else you really will fubar your trans. The fill/dipstick tube is located under the front turbo hose...between the battery and the front of the engine. Dig down deep...it's way down there and has a very small yellow handle with a latch that you'll need to unclasp to get the dipstick out.

So, the tansmission line appears to be rusted into the cooler/rad, so I'm taking it in to my mechanic to do the flush (plus it's freakin' cold outside).
He's a little uneasy using the case of Mobil1 3309 fluid I have since he's never been able to verifiy that this is the exact compatible fluid for the 5-speed automatics.
Before I take the car in next week, are we 100% sure that Mobil1 3309 is identical to the Volvo trans fluid ($15/quart)?

I am thoroughly impressed by Made In Japan's detailed trans flush...with digital photos... Great advice :->
I am curious if I should switch to synthetic if the previous owner took it mostly to the local dealership for service (good records). I am not sure what type of fluid "Volvo" uses but it has been changed at least once.

If it's been flushed fairly often and the fluid in it now is not black and smell burnt then you'll have not trouble at all changing it out to synthetic. For your car, Mobil-1 Synthetic ATF will work great and your car will love you for it!

I did my 97 850 T5 last night. Great instructions! Much appreciated. My V70 will follow soon.

2. Here is my technique-modified from Haynes. No need to remove the battery and battery tray and no need to disconnect the hose from the cooler. Get a box wrench 24-mm (Sears). The drain plug for the ATF is on the Right side of the Transmission casing. Drain ATF, you should get approx. 3.5 liters out the first time. This is the amount you need to put back during the final top-up.
However, for the each flush cycle: a. Reinstall the drain plug finger-tight b. Add just 2 liters of ATF c. Start the engine (don't drive as the drain plug is not tightened), shift through all gears with at least 5 seconds in each gear. d. Drain the ATF
