Two questions, actually. My 96 base 850 has the plastic steering wheel. I know of a 95 850 T that has what I guess is a leather covered, nicer feel, grip and appearance.
There's no key for the car. Can the key cylinder be removed with appropriate tools, so I can get at the wheel nut? Also, would the 95 wheel bolt right on, horn contacts and all, to my 96 base, or would I need the air bag, as well?
Volvo 850 Can steering be removed with no key?

It might Be easier to access the air bag Torx screws , T 25 deep socket or skinny needed, by removing the plastic trim around the wheel, then going after the nut, Jim. I can have a look at my 99 today and see if that works.

You can't really remove the cylinder without the key short of cutting it out of the column. The lock tab won't release without the proper key in the switch. If the car is purely a parts donor then I would think you could slice the top of the cylinder casting with a Dremel and get the cylinder out that way.

Yup, the lock tab is the problem. And unfortunately, the T25's are not accessible with the wheel at straight ahead. The car will be in the crusher in a week or 2, so making a mess of the cylinder housing to get the cylinder out shouldn't cause anyone to be distressed. Would a heavy hammer and a hefty center punch do the job?
It also pains me to see the beautiful faux mahogany trim dash in that car meet its maker. Sigh.
