Volvo Repair Database Grease on CV joint 2002 V70XC

Post by FritzMissel »

I recently purchased a used XC (57K miles) from a reputable local dealer. The car is like new...very clean...except for some thick grease on the right passenger side CV boot or axle boot...not sure which. There is a grease shield protecting the serpentine belt so I'm wondering if this is normal. Could someone confirm? Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

There should be no grease on the outside of the joint. Usually this is a sign that the boot is torn and leaking. It probably needs a new boot. Any clicking noise when you're turning? If so, worst case is that you may even be in for a axle shaft replacement.

No, no clicking and everything else is really clean. I've e-mailed the problem to the dealer as the car is still under a 50/50 warrantee. I also checked the boot...no cracks/breaks that I can see.

I also have 2002 V70XC and the left inner boot is leaking and is now causing a vibration and knocking and would like to replace both front axles. Does anyone know where I can get the CV axles other than from the Dealer? (I have already tried raxles.com and they don't have it.)

Give www.fcpgroton.com a call. Even though nothing is listed on their site, they should be able to help you out. I would avoid some cheap Chinese knock-off's in your case. Others have tried them on 850's and they've been bad news, so you may have to bite the bullet on this one and get OEM's. I'm really surprised that Raxles didn't have them, but then again a '02 Volvo is still pretty new for being in need of an axle replacement. Good luck!

Thanks for the recommendation. I called www.fcpgroton.com and they do have the front axles with installed boots and grease for about $150 each side, which is a lot cheaper than from the dealer. They said they are aftermarket but they guarntee them for life and they do specialize in replace parts for volvo, saab, and BMW. I put my order in today. I will let everyone know how the job goes.

I replace both front right and left axles. The parts fit perfectly and the car does not shake anymore. The axles came with all boots installed and pre-greased for $150 each plus $12 shipping. The axles were aftermarket, but I could not find any major difference from the old part. I recommend www.fcpgroton.com if you are looking for alternative axles.

I need a drivers side axle for my 2002 V70. I phoned FCP and told me they don't carry any axles for the P2 cars. Told him about your post and he assured me that they do not carry any drive axles for a '02. Only for 2000 and older.
WTF???

Maybe they changed their inventory. I went to their main internet site: www.foreigncarpartsonline.com and they show them to be temporarily out of stock. You might still give Raxles.com (call them and ask to talk to Marty) a try. Enough time has passed that they might carry them at this point. I checked several sites and they all say "unavailable." I do know that IPD has them but they are a bit more from them (but you'll be assured good quality): IPD's Offering for your Drive Axle
