Firmware level determines if you get limp mode or not; that was part of Volvo's "fix" in 2006

No, on the ETM. The horrible fix was to allow more errors between the two sensors before the ECU gave up and forced limp mode. That got Volvo out of a lot of warranty repair by pushing it to 10 years before you got limp

I can't really complain - mine made it to 130k, which is several sets of caps/rotors/ playing with IAC,

Ive got 90k on the replacement yellow ETM.

I think root cause was bad fuel pump relay. It has been replaced and I will monitor.

Five years later and I’m still driving this beautiful car, the Shagg Wagon

The ETS light comes on when the brake position sensor on the power brake booster faults, I have a spare in the glove box but it rears its head about twice a year

I had the exactly the same crank, no start due to low battery last week.

Shagg just got a a nice new valve job with stem seals in June!
