I've got a noisy rear bearing I'm getting set to replace. Does anybody know the torque for the axle nut? One post I read on replacing the front hub said something about greasing the lip on the inboard side of the bearing. Is that the same on the rear hub?

Removal
1) Remove wheel. Release brake lines from clip on rear axle.
On left side, remove brake line 3-way connector from trailing arm. On
both sides, remove brake caliper bolts and suspend caliper with wire.

2) Release parking brake shoe adjuster. Remove guide pin,
brake disc, protecting cover, hub nut and hub.

Installation
1) Ensure axle shaft is clean. Install hub. Install NEW nut
on axle and tighten to 88 ft. lbs. (120 N.m), then tighten an
additional 120 degrees. Ensure no play is present in bearing. Using
Mandrel (5225), install protective cover.

2) Ensuring contact surfaces on disc and hub flange are
clean, install disc and guide pin. Tighten guide pin to 84 INCH lbs.
(10 N.m). Adjust parking brake shoes until brake disc cannot be
rotated, then loosen 4-6 notches. Using NEW bolts, install brake
caliper. Tighten caliper bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 N.m). To install
remaining components, reverse removal procedure.

Great, thanks.
It looks like the same bearing/hub is used on all 850's and on up to 2000 V70. True?

I think there are different parts for FWD and AWD

Also, FCP says the part is the same, but Alldata says the torque on the 1999 on is different

The AWD would probably have a splined rear hub since it's powered. I'm curious why the torque spec would be different for the same hub/bearing on 2 different models.

Ensure the shaft is clean.
Use a new nut. Tighten to 120 Nm . Angle-tighten to 30°.
Use bevel protractor 951 2050.
Check that there is no play in the bearing after installation.
Install the cap.
Use drift 999 5225.1999 rear hub nut spec

It looks like they backed the torque off in 99

A change in angle torque from 120 degrees ( early) to 30 (1999) is a huge change in final torque

The nut doesn’t see any rotational force, it just pins the hub to the shoulder on the spindle.

Confessions..when I did my rear hub I re-used the nut as I calculated the deformation was near zero, well below the plastic limit

Not surprising, I guess, that the updated spec is only + 30 degrees; 120 would be a powerful lot of torque, even for that large nut.

Jim - I have no idea if that spec is retroactive, but the parts are the same according to FCP and Volvo Parts Lisle
