Random Stalling

Post by ascannata »

Hi, I have been fighting this problem for over a year with my 94 850 Turbo Wagon stalling. I have researched and tried multiple things posted on this site with no success. The car will randomly stall at stop lights and highway speeds. The speed does not make much difference. When trying to re-start the car it will run for a few seconds and die or will run rough for a few seconds and die. If you wait a few minutes the car will eventually start and run fine until the next time it randomly stalls. The Check Engine Light never comes on! I read the codes manually and come up with 1-1-1 Uggh! If I disconnect the MAF the CEL will come on, so the light is working. When the car is running, it runs smooth and has lots of power.

Here is what has been done.

1. New plugs, wires, points, distributor cap and coil.
2. New MAF
3. New Cam Shaft Position Sensor.
4. New Fuel Filter.
5. New Fuel Pump Relay
6. Fuel Pressure at rail is good. Fuel Pump replaced 2 years ago
7. Idle Air Control Valve cleaned.
8. Trany was rebuilt 2 years ago.
9. No apparent vacuum line issues,

Obviously i have some coin into this car and would like to be able to drive it without putting me in danger in the horrible Seattle traffic. This car has 173,000 miles on it should still have some life left in it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

A couple of points that may be worth checking: Are the ignition components made by Bosch/Bougicord/Volvo OEM? Is the main spark plug wire from coil to distributor tied back to hold it away from the other wires such as the MAF and CPS wiring? Are the ECT and wiring connector on the ECT in good working condition?
Good luck!

Thank you for the response. The Coil and the Distributor Rotor are after market (Not the brands you listed.) I checked the coil lead and it was not setting in the wire race slots on the air cleaner housing and was crossing the MAF. It is re-secured. I checked the connection to the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp Sensor). One of the pins had a bit of green corrosion. Cleaned with Electrical Contact cleaner.

One thing i noticed is the i have not heard the Aux Fan in the radiator compartment come on for a long time. Even on a hot day after the car has shutdown. Could that cause the issue i am experiencing? I remember it would run for bit when the car was hot after shut down. Coolant gauge is reading normal on the dash. If the fan has failed, should it through a Check Engine light?

You will need to dump the aftermarket stuff and cry twice. These cars like real parts andtroubleshooting a N! Combination of aftermarket stuff will be a nightmare

Are your grounds good? Had a problem with my old pickup and it would randomly stall. The ground cable from the computer to the frame was bad and the computer would shut down. Also make sure your engine to frame ground is good as mine was also bad and caused an issues with the plugs to have a weak spark and causing rough driving. And I had no trouble codes either

This could be fuel pump. I understand the FP was replaced 2 yrs ago. If this is aftermarket FP, then lifespan is unknown.

I have a brand-new Bosch fuel pump lying around with some odds and ends (air filter, oil filters etc) that I posted in the classified section of this forum.
