Real quick, and I know this is a common issue and from this forum this is what I've done:
updated software from dealership,
drain and fill method , Mobil 3309, 13 qts.
B4 update,
ran Vida no TCM codes
has updated TCM
replaced torque mounts & bushings, top and bottom,
performed adaptation with Vida
Drives great when tranny cold, once it's warmed it will flare up ONLY after I try accelerating from a decelerating position, usually 2-3 gear, occasionally 3-4, never from a stopped position and it drives great while in gear-tronic mode.

The last item I'm willing to do is replace solenoids or valve body from TransGo kit. Will this finally take care of my issues? it's got 123K with new timing belt but I'm not willing to replace the tranny and will sell "as is" and upgrade to a newer XC90. Otherwise, this wagon is terrific but my wife does not want to deal with the "clunking" symptoms when she's driving it. I've found that if I feather it upon acceleration I can avoid 50% of these symptoms but it's still annoying.

Thanks,

One option is to replace the valve body with a brand new one, which includes new solenoids for a $448 cost if you do the labor yourself. You do have to make a couple of simple changes to the GM version of this valve body for Volvo compatibility and possibly lengthen wires in the harness. Can help with all changes needed if you decide to go this route. Can't guarantee this will fix the problem but based on it works well when cold and not hot there is a better than average probability this will solve your tranny problems.

oops, sorry mileage is 132K not 123K. but thanks for the follow up. I saw that GM aka AC Delco?, version as an option when browsing thru the forums earlier. Seeing as I'm under there and having to drop the sub frame, I'd like to be under there for the least amount of time. VB seems to be the way to go. I've read other adaptations are necessary? Solenoid #5 swapped out and reuse my #2? Does it come with the gasket too or do I have to purchase that separately. Seems like a better route than using RTV. Do I need to crawl under to check any markings (A,B or C etc,) prior to buying this VB?

Thanks again,

The PDF answers your questions.

The A or B marking will be on the valve body. There's no way of seeing it until you drop rhe subframe and remove the valve body cover. Yours will either be an A or B depending on build date.

Thanks again,
Please read through the attached PDF for the solenoid #2 swap and B5 spring replacement. The new AC Delco valve body only comes with the small cover plate gasket that's on the lower left of the VB. You will need to purchased a Volvo kit that includes the same cover plate gasket and also two o-ring type seals that go between the VB and transmission case. Part number and photo in the PDF, you need to get this kit for the two seals, which need to be held in place with Vasoline or transmission goo during VB installation. If you want to use a gasket for the VB pan cover those are available too.
I found it much easier to install the VB pan cover from above (especially if using RTV) so the tube from throttle body to intercooler above the VB cover needs to be removed. Extra work but worth it my opinion, this also made it easier to access the top pan bolts when removing and installing them.
From all the photos of the AC Delco VB I've seen and the one I purchased were all B revisions. As I mentioned in a previous post you don't need to match the revision letter in you original transmission, all the VB versions interchange according to the ATSG manual I have as long as the individual VB sections are not interchanged with different revisions. The manual does recommend using the later version VB revisions if possible. My car has had two transmission in it with 3 different valve body revisions. The AC Delco "B" revision VB in it now shifts great and it replaced a worn out rev C VB revision, which was the 2nd transmission installed by Volvo in my car.

Be prepared to lengthen 4 wires (total) to the two lower linear solenoids if you have an original early revision VB, which has the solenoid connectors on top as compared to the bottom with the later rev B VB.

I did a B4 update on my 2002 V70 2.4T, and it helped the 2nd to 3rd flare, but still flared occasionally. About two-three months later, and it doesn't flare at all. Maybe my transmission is a "slow" learner. They do need time to relearn things, but I'm not sure how long it takes.

I had delayed engagement and a noticeable whine on my 2001 T5 until one day the trans totally failed. I knocked out the internal filter by drilling a hole in the casing then tapping it out with a thread, replaced the filter with an inline Magnefine filter and delayed engagement and most of the shift worries are over.

Those internal filters will partially block causing all sorts of woes due to reduced pressures.

Just curious, as long as I drive in the gear tronic mode the car drives great. Is this normal when having these other tranny issues? I'm thinking as long as it doesn't do any additional harm, why would I spend $500 now just for the convenience of driving an automatic.

Wow I can't get our 2002 XC70 to shift well in Geartronic!! Apart from breaking the brittle plastic linkage inside the shifter I don't see why not.

If the car has been kept un-garaged the plastic pieces will be quite brittle by now so the less shifting the better.
