Leak at 6 Gallons

Post by firestarterpro »

Bought this 95 a few months ago, just put in the clutch and now im ready to roll, but now theres a leak at 6 Gallons maybe 7.

I replaced the clamp that goes at the top where you fill her up, but it didn't even show a sign of a leak when I took it off

a shop told me to fill it uo, drive it straight there and then he'd tape it up

Seems like something I could do at home, but Id like to know if its a common leak or if the previous owner hit something....

Any ideas?

**I do not know a lot about the fuel tank on a P80. That said, A leak at only 6 gallons (1/3 of tank) is not very much. I don't think a leaky line for fuel filler or evap system will cause a leak at that level of fuel. I think it is very likely that you have a hole in the fuel tank and you should definitely get that fixed asap. I do not know if the early 850s had metal or plastic fuel tanks, as that would greatly effect the recommended repair solution.

Can you crawl under WITH EYE PROTECTION, and see if you can find the leak? Like I said, should be somewhere low on the tank.

It was on the fuel filler neck. The symptom was you'd have trouble filling it up.

Go to the dealer with honey, not vinegar.

Most recalls have a use-by date 10 years after issue date
Recall Number
04V368000
Recall Date
07/30/2004
Component
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE

Consequence
FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

What Owners Should Do
VOLVO WILL INSPECT THE FUEL TANK AND REPLACE IT IF ANY EVIDENCE OF FUEL SEEPAGE OR LEAKAGE IS FOUND. ALL VEHICLES WILL RECEIVE NEW REINFORCEMENT BUSHINGS AT THE HEAT SHIELD ATTACHMENT POINTS TO PREVENT FUTURE LEAKS. THIS RECALL WILL BE CONDUCTED AS A SAFETY RECALL IN THE HOT WEATHER STATES OF ALABAMA, ARKANSAS, ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, NORTH CAROLINA, OKLAHOMA, SOUTH CAROLINA, TENNESSEE, TEXAS, AND UTAH, AND AS A SERVICE RECALL IN THE OTHER 33 STATES AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. This might be way out in left field but...it is possible it could be the fuel sending unit making the gauge act funny. My c70 was doing this a few months ago. Once the tank got down to around 1/3 of the way full it would sometimes show empty. I would be driving along with the gauge on about 6 gallons and the next thing I know I would look down and it would be flat on empty. I could turn the car off and back on and it might come back up to 6 gallons, or it might not. It only did this when the tank was about a third of the way full. Once I replaced the sending unit all was good. The strange thing was that when the gauge would go to flat empty the low fuel light would not come on. I heard that was a symptom of a bad sending unit.

Sorry just read the post again and I think I mis-read. If you cant get more than 6 or 7 gallons in before it starts leaking than what I just said won't help at all. If it leaks when you get down to 6 or 7 gallons, which would virtually impossible, than this could help. Sorry for the confusion.

The only possible leak I could find was here behind the exhaust pipe heat shield

The tailpipe had a clothes hanger holding it up before, so I assumed it was constantly banging against that sheild causing the plastic to eventually crack....

How do I seal a plastic tank?
