There is a newer way to remove sap and other contaminants from paint. Griot's garage(and other's) sells two different surface prep mitts that you use with speed shine. It serves the same function as a clay bar but way, way easier and better. The mitts are expensive but worth every penny. The mitt comes in a fine and a coarser grade, I only have used the heavier grade.
Everyone that I know, that has tried it, raves about it.

Fine and coarse grade ... sounds like an abrasive. Might be good for leveling, cutting and polishing but a abrasive is not a replacement for a Clay Bar.

A Clay Bar is Play Dough for your car. A Clay Bar lifts contaminants off the surface but it does not cut. Play Dough started off as wallpaper cleaner in the 1930s. It was used to clean soot of wallpaper by lifting the soot off rather then cutting. A Clay Bar does the same for your paint.

There are a lot of special rubber coated cloths that are said to perform the same function as well, together with the same lubricants used for clays. Washable though.
