98 S70 N/A: FCP Dash light kit (OSRAM/FLOSSER), durable?

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

Hey everyone, most of the way through my A/C job. (Taking this dash apart is not for the faint of heart!) Just waiting on some hard lines that I cut by accident... (Hello $500 job!) But anyhow, was wondering if I could get some insight here.

I purchased the FCP dash light kit (Volvo Dash Bulb Illumination Kit (S70 V70 C70) - Bulbkit70)
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... -bulbkit70

I replaced the bulbs. When I turned the car on, the bulb for the odometer wasn't working. Okay, fine. At least every other light on my dash was bright. Kind of nice actually. So I take a drive to pick up my friend.

I get back in the car, turn the car on, and turn the lights on and lo and behold... two more lights (left side) on the dash are apparently burnt out...

Is this user/installation error? (I did have to take off and put on my steering wheel twice because I forgot to attach the horn cable... and I did cut through some really expensive A/C lines... so I do commit errors.) Or do these bulbs suck? Is it possible that they popped loose? Only one review on FCP... Would really, really, really only like to take off that dash one more time in my life...

Next time you take it out look at the printed circuit. Figure out where the common ground for the lights are. Hook the common ground to a 12V supply. After that apply the +12V to the high side of the bulbs to make sure the bulbs work before you reinstall everything.

Check the contacts on the bulb sockets and the printed circuit, they maybe tarnished damaged or worn down. The spring contacts on the bulb sockets maybe fatigued. The car is 20 years old, electrical components develop defects, wear and tear with age just like everything else.

It is easy to put them in kinda wrong. Just turn them in all the way. Had the same proboem when doong my dash pad and odometer gear. Also, yoi should bot touch halogen bulbs wirh bare hands. They don't like no grease... at least that's what they told us when i was a kid.

Safe travels this weekend. See you on the BQE....

Have to take the P2 TOM Brooklyn as the T5 has a sticking rear caliper. One of the twins reported the hot brake smell and tested it with a cup of water ...sizzle sizzle

UPDATE:
Bulbs are fine. I pulled dash pad off today (only took one Fresh Air podcast to do so!) So I guess the suggestion is. really clean, jam, and double-check bulbs before putting the dash back together again! :)
