Key fob does not always work
2008 V70.Sometimes when I put the key in and hit the start button the dash blacks out and nothing happens. The brake pedal gets hard to press. After several attempts the car will start and it will work just fine, sometimes for weeks. Then it will happen again. The batteries in both key fobs have been replaced.

Brake pedal gets hard OR you need to press hard to get the car to start?
Next time have somebody watch the brake lights as you press on the brakes.
Brake light switch maybe out of place and intermittently not working.

Same car, often times I have had to hold the key fob in while pushing the brake and start button or else it will quit starting midway like yours. This is partly because the mechanism in mine has been damaged.
