Check your power steering auxiliary reservoir

I checked my pulleys a year ago when I did the timing belt. I know the AC pulley bearing needs replacing down the road but everything else is either fine or new. I've been thinking the whole time it sounds a little bit like when the power steering fluid level is a bit low but it isn't and the fluid has been flushed with new fluid.

Since mine is also leaky I'll just replace it and see what happens. I've got the dealership across the street from work and need to get a few vacuum tubes that look dry and worn as well. Might as well not put it off any longer.

And as for mileage it has sounded the same since I got the car about 60' km ago.

Please keep us updated because I sure would like to know what is in that reservoir that could cause the pump to whine???? It makes no sense to me, that is the main reason I made this thread in case others had the fluid seeping at the reservoir and a strange wine that in my car's case both were related and a simple replacement of the reservoir could fix both.

Several hundred miles later the reservoir is still dry. Notice the pump is original. June

There is a known fault with the reservoir where a small piece of tubing inside designed to avoid foam in the fluid can come loose. I've checked and not noticed foam in mine after driving but when replaced I'll be sure to take it apart to have a look.

I never noticed foam in mine when checking level either. But foam would be aeration and I believe would cause the pump to whine? Anyhow, thank you for keeping us updated! June

Cavitation: The formation of air bubbles in liquid.

The whine is the sound of thousands of air bubbles imploding. Each implosion creates a shock wave, the whine is the sum of all the shock waves.

Now that I am home and hear it through the TVs soundbar that is the exact sound my car was making before replacing the reservoir. June

Old fluid which has only been in there for two and a half years and 60' km was starting to look dark. I did pump it out this time as opposed to sucking it out of the top of the reservoir last time. It's more likely I got the old dirt out this way. The pictured bottle is flat and only about an inch thick.

Haven't test driven yet. Have to watch the burning pile of this year's garden waste a few more hours first.

Do you think your pump got damaged? Did you flush out the old fluid? I did have the fluid flushed at the same time in my car. June
