Just an update: I replaced the transmission valve body with one purchased from the above seller and it works! Now my tranny shifts like expected with no bang shifting. Sometimes it flares a bit between 2-3rd (I think), but even then it doesn't engage with a bang. Already replaced the B5 servo cap so I'm not doing anything more on that transmission.

I will say it took me TWO valve bodies from same seller before getting a good one. The first installed just fine but I got all kinds of trans codes and even worse shifting; it kept going into limp mode after only a mile when reset. The seller didn't even ask detailed questions and just sent me another. Those used (rebuilt) valve bodies were advertised as being tested and they are etched with QA persons initials, but I must have still gotten a bad one to start. The replacement has 2 brand new solenoids in it and works great. You can imagine how not-fun it was to go after the valve body location TWICE to change them!

So my 2002 T5 is stable and driveable. Still has the rattle'y suspension and CV joints.

Now on to changing the head gasket on the 2001 T5. After that, I'll decide which one gets further attention...

The 2002 turbo has Bosch throttle and the beginnings of many more Denso sensors such as crank and cam sensors; a big improvement on the 2001 cars. Not to mention the new thermostat & temp sensor design that is an easier to change out.

Dont worry, some did it 3 times. Thanks for the update. This is also a lesson, dont install an used valve body unless it has at least new solenoids - not cheap chinese ones but either Rostra or Sonnax
