Changing out the oil filter

Post by Mr. Detail »

Heh gentlemen. Just wanted some reassurement before I change the oil for the first time on my new/used 2002 V70.
My old S70 had the solid metal one piece filter but apparently this one has a rubber o-ring that needs to be seated along
with the filter cartridge.
When I remove the housing, is the o-ring seated in place around the old filter so I can repeat the same procedure?

Thx much!

The o ring is fitted to a track on the filter canister. It stays in place when the filter is taken out so you can easily just out the new one in the same place. Don't forget to lightly lube the new o ring so that it slides into to place easily.

The oring goes on the outside of the plastic filter “ cap”

Remove the old with a pick, put the new one in the right groove in the cap.

The old oring can be washed in the dishwasher and used as a hair band.

I would love to give the old O-ring to my teenage daughter for that use?

Georgeandkira,
There is only one V70 in my driveway. You must have me mistaken for someone with $$.
My previous Volvo was a '98 S70. This is my first Volvo with an "o-ring" dealio.

The oil filter cap only needs to be tighten until it stops. The o ring seals due to placement and has nothing to do with torque on the cap. If it is tight then there is risk that the cap socket wrench slips on the little flats on the cap.

That will get everyone's attention.
