Volvo V50 automatic gearbox

Volvo V50 automatic gearbox

My 2008 Volvo V50 automatic /manual has developed a problem, when cold it will not change up through the gears, it remains in first for up to 5 minutes running. The gearbox then work perfectly. Any ideas why

It sounds like the transmission fluid's viscosity is too high when cold and comes within range after warming up ... When was the last time the transmission fluid was changed?

Thanks for your reply. The oil has just been changed using the correct Volvo supplied oil, there wasn't a problem for the first week or so. I wonder if the oil level is low or that Volvo have supplied the wrong grade for this gearbox

Most likely it was dirty from use ... "When was the last time the transmission fluid was changed?"

I have only owned the car for three months. When I changed the oil is was very dirty, black in fact. Do you think that the new oil will slowly work through the gearbox and release what ever is sticking

We use the word Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) to different between the oil in the engine and transmission.

Yes the crud may work it's way loose. Keep a eye on the ATF and change it more frequently until it cleans up.

Do not Power Flush the transmission. Power Flushing can cause too much gunk to come loose at once and clog the transmission, stick to simple drain and fills.

Problem solved !!! the ABS sensor on the front left hand wheel was faulty which in some way confused the central computer causing the gearbox to malfunction. Sensor replaced, car now perfect. Thanks Rick for your imput
