V70 Temp Sensor, hard starting

Post by grovechef »

Re: 2001 V70 2.4T . I could not find the cause of engine misfire at every speed. I found an experienced independent Volvo mechanic who changed the plugs and a coil pack. Misfire problem solved, but car was hard to start unless the temperature sensor was disconnected. When sensor is disconnected, it seems to start normally. He replaced the sensor - didn’t help. Then I replaced the sensor ($50 USD) and the thermostat - still didn’t help. The fan runs for two minutes after shut down every time, and the temp gauge is dead. Running the car with the fan disconnected only causes the engine to overheat. Also I get error message “SRS service urgent”, which I cannot cancel. Probably that’s from removing the rear seats to replace the fuel (which I thought was the cause of the misfire). Mechanic scratched his head, said probably the fuel pump. I replaced the pump. That part cost $250 USD (and the seats are hard to get out and reinstall, if you have never done it before). At this point I am at a loss of knowing what to do. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU.

Did you use theVolvo part for the sensor? It's a finicky beast which likesSwedish only parts, after markets are known to give problems.

The fuel pump relay is also a thing to check by jumping, but the correct diagnostic tree would be checking fuel pressure at rail.

For the temp sensor or " ECT" this is the one you want 9125463

Hard start in cold weather can be as simple as battery and oil grade related. I use Pennzoil Euro 5w40 for winter time cold start. It is our street parked daily driver. Also, I keep gas tank to not go below 1/2 mark during winter time.
