Kallekula's $160 V70 2001

Post by kallekula »

Neighbor was about to sell her wagon to the junk yard but I bid $10 more and got it😀
It’s not a pretty car but I will try to freshen up the interior a bit. Engine, tranny and AC works fine. It has 180k on the odometer.
It had an awful pulsating/grinding noise driving on the freeway so I replaced the front wheel bearings. Of course it was the rear ones that were failing😕
Has two codes for evap leak and cat efficiency. Found a disconnected hose under the vehicle so that might fix one of them. About the cat, I’m doing something I read about but haven’t tried yet. Spacing the downstream O2 sensor with some spark plug foulers. Just hope the cat isn’t too far gone to pass smog.

Nice find. N/A ? www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOx3Q8vqoz4

Nice seat cushion swap

The cat may be the rear O2 sensor, a broken flex downpipe, or a fouled cat (acetone may fix it)

Before adding the spacer (foul plug), I would work through all possible causes. Throwing in the spacer may turn off the light, but end up ruining a good cat and yielding poor performance and mpg. In the end the emissions will still be failing - so it may not work depending on how the testing is performed in CA.

Start with what has been mentioned. Look for leaks, sensors that are failing/failed and then visually examine the cat for damage. Once you have the rest sorted and you know the engine management is properly functioning would inserting the foul plug make sense.

Car is a nice score.

"You guys in CA don't get any protective coating on your suspension parts, do You?" Funny things happen in California. For instance, in the '60's MB sold "California Coupes", a hard top, but no soft top. I guess "it never rains in California".

Curious if you got the car operational with or without the defouler plugs.

The test results you show are from what source? What I am most curious about is if you use the defouler plugs - does the car still pass emissions or is it just beating the computer you are using.

Ha, I don't know if you're being sarcastic or there really is protective coating for suspension parts. I have never heard of that :)
