Or else you get this nightmare. Allegedly 121k on this '02 T5 motor. I have to wonder if the previous owner *ever* changed their oil. The bearings all feel fine but you bet I'm going to check compression as soon as I can.

And a question - what's the bottom of the PCV channel in the oil pan supposed to look like? It's clogged on mine, so I've got it soaking in acetone. Where is it supposed to drain into the pan? At the bottom?

Maybe s/he did change the oil regularly, but with Wallyworld supertech dino oil. And by regularly every 10k miles.

That channel in the block continues into the channel in the oil pan, which makes a 90˚ turn at the bottom of the sump. So it looks like you have the pan off and the answer to your question is a simple "yes."

For the record, I swear by SuperTech DexIII (dino) for all of my P80 cars. It's the only thing I've ever used in them. I do keep it clean.

Mike posted a trick about clearing this port by ramming plastic tube into the gunk and then cutting the end off each time it plugged until you worked it through once the passage is open. You can gun brush it and then run multiple oil changes to get the rest of the crud out.

I just went through this nightmare on my V70 pulling the pan, luckily my engine was pretty clean inside. I am going to Synthetic oils as this Volvo notice suggests. even the box could be cleaned out - didn't have to replace it. I have to say Castrol GTX green kept this motor very clean over the 50k I've run this motor but I'm taking Volvo's advice here...

I'm a little unclear on the path of the oil sump port. The document shows the port is a 180 degree trap, where does the external port connect to that port exactly?

The lower port for the oil trap is in the engine block. That channel connects at 90˚ to a vertical channel in the block, which connects to the square channel in the top of the oil pan.

Is that what you're asking?
