I have a 2005 XC90 2.5T with 110K miles, since this is a common topic in later models with oil cooler mounted in the back side of the engine, I want to ask a few question after I read the Pelican article on Oil Cooler...
https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticl ... cement.htm
1. How do you know it corrodes INTERNALLY?
2. How long does the oil cooler last?
3. The Cooler Hoses x2: how long do they last?

1. I suppose you don't. But there's no reason it should at all unless your coolant is in terribly bad shape or you're using corrosive oil.
2, 3. As long as any other part of the cooling system, that is mostly long enough for other stuff to break first.

I don't think we have a single documented oil cooler failure on the bastard and P2 style oil cooler on MVS?
I replaced my hoses on. Preventative basis after 17 years and they were in great shape. No sign of failures. I dabbed. My own protective chafe layer with a heavy wrap product and wrote up a thread about it

Conceptually, this is no different than a heater hose.
All hoses eventually fail, the question is when.
I am sending this car to my kid in college > 1000 miles away, so I might replace these hoses preventively at 14 yrs old and 110K.
What do you all think?

Roll under and snap a picture. I bet your ozone load is low in NE, in which case I would leave them be
If Junior is using the car lightly like most college kids, definitely leave them.

Thanks,
The bottom line is I am trying to avoid potential repair costs when the car is > 1000 miles from home.
Even simple hose replacement is > $100 as shop labor is now $100-$120/h.
I was just wondering roughly when (years/miles) these hoses fail.

Original Volvo hoses in low ozone, 20 years plus.
I Gave my old 99 heater hoses away and they were still like new after 17 years 180k miles
I wouldn't replace proactively
