850r with replaced motor. how to id if motor is a 2.3 or 2.4

any ideas? I;m looking at a 1997 850R that supposedly had the original motor swapped with a low mileage 2.3

are there external cues that are obvious or do i need to find stamped numbers etc..

Get the engine family ID off the engine block.

this is on PS behind the timing cover towards the firewall?

It is stamped on the block, behind the timing firewall side.

It can be hard or impossible to get your head where you can see it. I power wash the block on that side then use a mirror to read it or stick my phone down there and take pictures, then read it off the pictures.
