Hi All
I have a 2001 S60 turbo. It's latest trick is when I turn the key and nothing happens. Almost nothing. The lights come on but the starter doesn't engage. It will typically do this twice. On the 3rd and usually a 4th attempt the starter spins the engine at normal speed but it won't start. Consistently on the fifth attempt the engine starts right away and runs fine. Ive changed the ignition switch with out any improvement. I'm thinking starter/solenoid but the engine cranking without starting is inconsistent with the starter being the only problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Brian

On the old immobilizer cars they would start and die right away. If you flip the key over and reinsert it always starts the next try. I assume you aren't getting "start prevented" message on info center. check the lead wire at the starter for corrosion or tension. Check the amp draw to the starter when it does crank. You will know when the starter draws too many amps. The tach will jump when cranking.

Was the ignition switch replaced with new, Volvo parts not from eBay?

Check all high current connections going from battery to starter. A loose connection will sometimes arc over and make a better connection. Check ground side connections as well including engine to chassis cable.
You would think it should not prevent it from starting once the engine spins over but maybe the intermittent connection is messing up the computer.
Could also be the starter itself going but as you said how do you explain the engine does not catch when cranking.

Back to basics. How old is the battery? Turn on headlights for 31 seconds, key on, engine not running, then turn off and measure battery voltage. Report back voltage and temperature
Alternatively, charge overnight at at least 4 Amp charge level.
I believe your S60 has the same starter bypass wire as the V70 series, where you can evaluate starter and wiring by jumping voltage past the immob and switch
WARNING...THIS METHOD BYPASSES PARK INTERLOCKS ,so be aware that car needs to be in neutral/ park with working brake set.

"Starting prevented-Try Again" would appear if it were a key issue. Also with a key issue starter does not turn except that you hear a click on the first attempt then nothing for all other attempts until the key is re-inserted.
Often the code IMM-321 can be read by Vida due to the antenna ring not sending the key signal to the ECM. In this case the key signal is received but not sent. Starter will not engage or will engage and not start. A common fix is to remove the steering shroud and clean the antenna ring connector with electrical contact cleaner.
