2006 XC90 2.5 T no start after head job Topic is solved

2006 XC90 2.5 T no start after head job
We did a head job on this XC90. Now it is not starting. All Data is not clear on position of cam shafts. I saw a video saying the numbers on the rear of the intake camshaft has to be on the bottom. The numbers on the exhaust camshaft have to be on the top. Getting code 340B (intake cam signal) on scanner. All help and suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about the numbers on the camshaft... But some things you can check... How is the compression? Low compression across all cylinders would support a mis-timed intake or exhaust camshaft. You can probably rotate the engine by hand and watch the valves to make sure it's at least basically correct. Also, you'll want to be meticulous about setting the VVT cam gears correctly relative to their cams. (And do note that one of the procedures in one f the manuals is just WRONG... So think it through and make sure it makes sense...)

I don't know anything about this, but I do like a mystery. So my only personal suggestion is to check the battery to make sure it's up to specs. Thank you both for the information. Thank you for that video. I have a little bit more understanding now. Although, this engine does not have spring loaded vvt hubs. Update: I have it running now. I re-did the timing with locking the rear cams. I then loosened the cam vvt hubs, set the belt timing,re-torqued the vvt hubs, she started up, had to un-flood her first. I should also note that we did replace the exhaust vvt hub due to play in it. This engine has the dual vvt setup. However: Now has a rough idle and 341B code for the exhaust cam position. Also is showing 1B00H/6912 code, but my Snap On scanner is not telling me what it means, and I cannot find anything on line about it. So here's what I am thinking. Do I have to re do timing once again? Really hoping a valve is not bent again. This car came in for bent valves. Also, misfire monitors say it is not misfiring. Before we took the engine apart, the misfire monitors were counting up.

Thank you both again! She's running smoothly now. The exhaust cam was one tooth off. It really comes down to reading multiple times of the forums. For whatever reason, All Data does not have clear information on this setup. Now have a code for the leak detection pump. I'll have to call the customer. Thanks again! I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!

I got my timing off twice, once after doing a T-belt on a non-T 6 cylinder and once when I did exhaust VVT hub on the '05 (5 cylinder). Pretty easy to do if you have not done a few of these. Fortunately one was close enough that I was able to get the hub back in range by adjusting the outer sprocket ring (3 screws on front). The other I had to re-do the belt.
If you're going to work much on Volvos in future, have a look around and see about getting VIDA and a knock-off DICE on a cheap PC (read up on minimum specs). Ton of stuff you can do with one of these, not too expensive in the end. In lieu of the hardware setup (with DICE), you can find a copy of the software here that'll give you a great reference for any future work you might do- viewtopic.php?f=10&t=86856

This one took me four attempts to get it right. I remember I did a head job when I worked at a Toyota dealer. (I was their used car tech) I believe it was a v50, but don't quote me on that. Anyway, I don't recall having this problem back then, but then again, this was 7 years ago. I'm weary of buying knock off software, I tried it for the Toyota's. Needless to say, it didn't work. There went $125. But I appreciate your input. The prices have come down for the software/computer setup's. Used, I mean. You can buy the whole GM tech2 with Saab now for under $300. I should look into it for Volvo. (Now that I have this Volvo nut Customer.)

Few thousand Volvo owners using this same setup, it's not much of a risk. One person on the forum link that I noted sells the entire thing, might be worth investigating. Cannot manage cars after 2014 (VIDA is web based after that point IIRC) and with a clone I have yet to hear from anyone successfully connecting to corporate for software downloads (requires membership but pretty sure most of the knockoff DICE units have the same SN and they're blocked) but barring that, you can do a buttload of stuff. I probably "paid" for my unit after the second time I used it, beginning 2011. Best single investment I have made on my cars by a long shot.
