Which website sells Volvo clips, bolts, and other tiny parts?

Post by FireFox31 »

Hello, each time I work on my 2000 V70, I have to remove rusty clips, bolts, and other tiny parts. I'd love to buy replacements, but they aren't available at even the most comprehensive online parts store - Volvo Parts Web Store. I can try a dealership, but that's tedious.

Which website has parts diagrams for and sells all the clips, bolts, and other tiny parts which are rusting and breaking on our 20 year old cars?

Lot of tiny little stuff like that is probably NLA. Volvo Parts Web Store has been my best source for odds and ends, but if they don't have, it's unlikely a dealer would. Junkyard is your best bet if you have any around you that have these old cars.

For my 2002 Mercedes, there's a parts website like Volvo Parts Web Store with full diagrams and obscure parts. But they never have the nuts, bolts, fasteners, and other tiny parts available. But the dealership can get them. That's why I wonder if Volvo is the same, that the parts are still out there, but they're just too small for websites to bother with.

How about the alternative - Is there a website which lists the sizes of each nut and bolt shown on parts diagrams? If I knew the sizes in advance, I could buy them at a hardware store before starting the job so I had them on hand. Once I start a job, I need to finish the same day (working in a community workshop), so I must have all parts on hand.

This is one place we can help, ourselves. When we do DIY jobs, mark down the hardware sizes ( type, shaftdiameter, head size, length) and capture it in photos

Index by Volvo part number

E.g. remove ECUbhousing bolt from left fender
( hex M6, 10mm socket, 15 mm length)
Empty Nester

For the most part hardware is hardware and a suitable replacement bolt can be purchased at any good hardware store. I have a particularly good True Value down the street that has the black oxide finished nuts and bolts in just about every size and shape imaginable. Knowing the sizes in advance would be a real help and Vadis / Vida really don't help with a description of the proper size bolt - just the part number.

The really tough stuff is the plastic parts. I had the rear seat latch housing break on the old XC and tried to order a new one to no avail. That part is more than decorative, it is vital to the function of the latch itself. I wound up getting a junk yard version and then I had to modify things to secure it back into a functional state. On the plastic parts I fear we are just out of luck. The biodegradable plastic is working exactly as designed.

The last True Value store in Minneapolis that had what Lee described closed a couple of years ago and auctioned all that beautiful hardware to a Florida farmer, I was told. Their basement was a sight to behold. The Chinese hardware now available is not that high quality—some of it is really like abscate chided above like pot metal.

Local ACE is also an excellent source for fasteners of all sorts.
RM European https://www.rmeuropean.com/ is unique for matching odd items that only Volvo Parts Online would list.

I usually use vparts.se and ebay for the small stuff like fasteners, rear hatch repair kits and that sort of thing. :) The Swedish site might charge a bit more than viable for shipping, though. :)

In this instance, I'm trying to replace the U nuts and screws which hold the cooling fan to the radiator. My local hardware stores have large inventories from Midwest Fasteners. These easily help me find most parts, but not these. So I tried the very comprehensive McMaster-Carr. I think I found the parts that I need, but I have to buy in quantities of 50.

The U nut I need is part 1268957, $1.74 at Volvo Parts Web Store or $5.50 at my local dealership. Since I need two, I should just pay $10 for the pack of 50 from McMaster.

Upon closer inspection, I did find them at Volvo Parts Web Store, under the electric cooling fan section. They're expensive, but I'd rather pay more than have 48 unused parts lying around my house.
